  1. Ask your employer about alternatives to full-time employment. Companies are offering older employees options such as working part-time or remotely, taking a sabbatical, or a semi- or phased-retirement arrangement.

  2. Take lifelong learning seriously. Becoming certified can open the door to new opportunities-in your current workplace and beyond.

  3. Start a side gig.to earn some extra money may become a source of income to fall back and expand on when a layoff happens.

  5. Go into business with your son or daughter. Combining your son/daughter’s knack for design with your knowledge of accounting could be the foundation for a successful venture.
